The Hangover (2009)
A few movies make you want to go back and watch it all over again and give you the same joy and laughter even after watching it for the 100th time. For me, the movie that gives me a guaranteed dose of laughter is The Hangover. Firstly, it is the hilarious dialogues that tend to stick with you even after weeks of watching. Secondly, the crazy drunk adventure story sets the benchmark for what can be classified as a ‘crazy night’. And lastly, the characters like Alan Garner make the whole movie worth watching. The Hangover is the definition of crazy, and even though we may not relate to such an insane night, what we definitely relate to is the friend’s group, or should I say, the ‘wolfpack‘. We all have an Alan or a Phil or Doug or Stu in our lives, and watching something on-screen which you relate to and understand on a different level makes this movie my ultimate pick!
When I need to charge myself up after a bad day, my go-to movie is none other than Welcome by Anees Bazmee. The movie is my wholesome cup of laughter after having a bad day at college or home. The comic punches, the characters, the acting and dialogue deliveries, they never get old! Every actor in the movie, from Akshay Kumar to Nana Patekar, has done great justice to their characters. Be it Majnu Bhai’s paintings, or Uday Shetty’s ‘Control Uday’, they never fail to make my day 50% better with their hilarious approaches. The storyline is a well-written mixup of confusion, songs, drama and comedy. The final scene with the Antakshari on the swaying hill cottage, and the swarm of bees flooding them in, is a frolic dose of laughter. I could rely on Welcome without any second thoughts when I wish to switch my mood from bored, tired, sad to happy, energetic, and hysterical.
Hera Pheri (2006)
My go-to movie for transforming my awful or tiring day into a bright, cheerful one is none other than Hera Pheri. As the movie’s name proposes its humorous nature, it certainly legitimizes itself when one watches it. Everybody from the primary cast to the side players of the movie gave it sheer magic to make the crowd giggle endlessly. The iconic trio of Shyam, Raju and Baburao was hilarious who went from habitating under a common roof to find themselves stuck in the middle of a kidnapping plot which soon transformed into a comedy of errors. Be it their verbal battles or spontaneous songs to humorous wordplays or the comic timing – everything gave life to the film. From “yeh Baburao ka style hai” to “utha le re Baba”, their accent, dialogues, and personality traits had such a profound effect on its audience that these gradually became a part of the daily language of its fans. Besides, a movie certainly marks its success as soon as it enters the world of memes as Hera Pheri did a long time ago. I don’t think I’ll ever have to think of a choice to lift my mood or when I need a reason to giggle until I have this stunning movie to watch.
Chennai Express (2013)
My go-to movie for a dose of hearty laugh is Chennai Express, a rom-com directed by Rohit Shetty. The movie stars the ‘Badshah of Bollywood’, Shah Rukh Khan and the heart-throb of India, Deepika Padukone, as the protagonists. The story of Rahul going on a vacation to Goa and getting into trouble while trying to make an impression on Meenamma, who is fleeing from her bodyguards to escape a forced marriage, is quite interesting. The sequences that have the comical elements then eventually lead to Meena and Rahul becoming soulmates. The dialogues, punch times, and the acting of the cast make the movie a must-watch. Along with this, the movie offers some scenic beauty of the southern part of India that serves as a treat to the audience’s eyes. My favourite part of the movie is when Meena kicks Rahul off the bed when she has a nightmare. The movie revolves around Rahul trying to escape Meena’s gangster father’s empire to go back to his normal life and Meena accompanying him to save herself from the forced marriage. Still, in a light-hearted comical way, the movie keeps the audience glued to their screens. Along with it, the North-South chit-chat coded in the songs gives you a joyous rollicking. Therefore, Chennai Express qualifies for this list.
Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
The world of cinema is magical – the stories, the characters and the songs can transport us to a land never known to us and sometimes, those same characters become such an integral part of our life and leave an imprint on our minds forever. However, on a day when nothing seems to be going your way, binging on a comedy movie seems like a great way to bring your mojo back. On a day when nothing seems to be going my way and everything feels dull, my go-to movie has to be Andaz Apna Apna. It manages to uplift my mood every time I watch it. Also, it has to be the only movie that manages to make me laugh, right from the beginning till the end. It has a mix of perfect comic timing and equally comical characters, who share great chemistry throughout the movie. From the background music to the action sequences to the dialogues, everything is just perfect for me. In fact, this movie was considered a flop back then and didn’t invite many people to the theatres. But over the years, it gained a fan following of its own. Bollywood has gifted us with many gems, but this particular one definitely takes away the prize for me every single time! I don’t feel any other movie can surpass what this movie offers in terms of comedy.
Grown Ups (2010)
My go-to movie to watch is Dennis Dugan’s Grown Ups – a super witty movie where comedy superstars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider are at their chucklesome characters. After coach Buzzer passes away, these childhood friends reunite at the coach’s funeral. It doesn’t matter that these five guys are now respectable husbands and fathers. Once their pack is together, nothing will stop these childlike grown-ups from getting back into their natural habitat, a mini escape from their adult lives. This movie is proof that you never really grow up and forget your inner child. One of my favourite scenes in the movie is when all the guys, namely – Lenny, Eric, Marcus, Kurt, and Rob, visit the water park and start peeing in the pool, and everyone is forced to run out of the pool as the pool water starts turning black. Believe me when I say – this movie is hilarious! I always go back to watch it, even if it’s for the 100th time! And I’m pretty sure you will too.
